The ARCHEOGUIDE project will bring together complementary expertise existing in the different participating organizations. In particular the Industrial partners of the proposed project are:

Partner 1: INTRACOM S.A. is the largest Telecommunications Industry in Greece. The company’s main activities relate to the design, development and manufacturing of both hardware and software for advanced telecommunications and data processing systems. INTRACOM will be responsible for the mobile data communication and multimedia database issues, as well as for the ARHEOGUIDE system integration. In addition, having extensive experience in Project Management, it will be the project coordinator responsible for the overall administrative, technical and exploitation management.

Partner 2: IGD, one of the leading European research institutes in Computer Graphics and Virtual Reality technologies will be responsible for solutions for the vision-based position and orientation tracking system that will be developed in the project. In addition IGD will contribute to the creation of the virtual representation of the reconstructed sites based on its experience in high end virtual reality presentations and the modeling technology needed for this kind of applications.

Partner 3: ZGDV, one of the most important European research institutes in Computer Graphics and Virtual Reality technologies will be in charge of Visualization, Man-Machine Interface, and Position Tracking. Furthermore the consortium will benefit from additional know-how, due to ZGDV’s membership and strong collaboration within INI-GraphicsNet, the world largest international network of institutions which are doing applied research in the field of Computer Graphics.

Partner 4: CCG, an important European Computer Graphics research institute will contribute in the development of content creation tools and 3D visualization techniques with close cooperation with partner 6. Besides assistance to Post Reality they will work in the creation of animated characters (ancient athletes) to simulate and visualize ancient games.

Partner 5: A&C 2000 has a rich background in IT projects pertaining to the cultural heritage sector such as systems related to the world of constructions, of building restorations, geo-topographical techniques, design and management of data bases. The participation of A&C 2000 is essential for ensure that recommendations and guidelines of international authoritative bodies in the cultural heritage sector are taken into account in the project. In addition A&C 2000 experience in differential GIS and GPS will contribute to the development of the ARCHEOGUIDE site information database and tracking systems.

Partner 6: Post Reality, an important Computer Animation company with experience in the creation of 3D animations for cultural sites and multimedia titles, will be responsible for the development of content creation tools to be provided to site managers and content creators. Besides Post Reality will contribute to the creation of compelling content to be stored in Ancient Olympia’s site information server database. It will also assist Partner 7 during the trials.

Partner 7: Hellenic Ministry of Culture will provide the archaeological site and museum of Ancient Olympia for trials and will contribute with authoritative expertise concerning the content of the site information database. The participation of the Ministry will be essential for the dissemination and further exploitation of the project’s results through cultural exhibitions and events. A major opportunity for further exploitation of ARCHEOGUIDE is expected to be the Cultural Olympiad, associated to the 2004 Olympics to take place in Athens. A successful completion of the ARCHEOGUIDE project will lead the Ministry to the decision for the use of ARCHEOGUIDE systems to a large number of Hellenic cultural heritage sites expected to by part of Cultural Olympiad.

The partners of the ARCHEOGUIDE consortium will make different contributions to the exploitation of the project results, and they will have different benefits and sources of revenue:

  • The technology providers (INTRACOM, IGD, ZGDV, Post Reality, A&C 2000, CCG) will use their contacts to decision-makers in the multimedia and telecommunication industries to promote and market the ARCHEOGUIDE products. They will generate additional revenue by selling the software and hardware components, the technical services, and by administrating the ARCHEOGUIDE services.
  • The user of the consortium (Hellenic Ministry of Culture) will support marketing efforts by providing access to reference installations and by disseminating information about the project’s results among potential users. Will benefit from using the ARCHEOGUIDE system in-house, and may generate additional revenues by increasing the number of visitors to the trial sites.
  • The research partners (IGD, ZGDV and CCG) will make ARCHEOGUIDE results known in the scientific community. They will benefit from the ARCHEOGUIDE by acquiring knowledge about user requirements and application fields of their methodology.
